What is the purpose of encryption in network security?

Encryption is a fundamental cryptographic process that converts human-readable data (plaintext) into an unreadable, encoded format (ciphertext). Its primary purpose in network security is to ensure confidentiality, meaning that if the data is intercepted during transmission, it cannot be understood by unauthorized entities. Additionally, cryptographic protocols that use encryption, such as TLS/SSL and IPsec, often incorporate hashing algorithms to provide integrity, which verifies that the data has not been altered or tampered with en route from the sender to the receiver.

A. Monitoring and detecting network attacks is the primary function of systems like Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS), and Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) platforms.

B. Authentication and authorization are processes managed by protocols and services like RADIUS, TACACS+, and Kerberos, which verify user identity and define access privileges, respectively.

D. Preventing unauthorized physical access falls under the domain of physical security, which involves measures like locked server rooms, biometric scanners, and surveillance systems.

Odom, W. (2019). CCNA 200-301 Official Cert Guide, Volume 1. Cisco Press. In Chapter 14, "Basic Security Concepts," the section "Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability (CIA)" explicitly states, "Confidentiality prevents the unauthorized disclosure of data... The primary way to ensure confidentiality is with encryption" (p. 438). The section on Integrity notes that hashing is used to ensure data has not changed, a function often coupled with encryption in secure protocols.

2. University Courseware:

Rivest, R. (2014). 6.857 Computer and Network Security, Lecture 2: "Crypto: Primitives". Massachusetts Institute of Technology: MIT OpenCourseWare. The lecture notes define the goals of cryptography, highlighting that encryption schemes are the primary tool for achieving confidentiality (secrecy) of messages. 3. Official Vendor Documentation:

Cisco. (2018). IPsec VPN. Cisco Networking Academy, CCNA Security v2.0 Course Booklet. Chapter 5, "Cryptographic Systems," details the goals of securing communications. It specifies, "Encryption provides confidentiality by transforming data into an unreadable format... Hashing ensures integrity by verifying that data has not been altered" (pp. 5-2 to 5-4). This demonstrates the combined role of cryptographic systems in protecting data.
