Which of the following ensures that a computer system has the latest security fixes and improvements?

Windows Update is the primary service used by Microsoft Windows operating systems to download and install software updates. Its core function is to deliver security patches that protect against newly discovered vulnerabilities, as well as provide performance improvements and feature enhancements for the operating system and other Microsoft products. By regularly applying these updates, it ensures the computer system is fortified with the latest security fixes and functional improvements, which is a critical practice in system maintenance and cybersecurity. This mechanism is the most comprehensive choice for maintaining the core system's security posture.

B. Device drivers: These updates are specific to hardware components (e.g., graphics card, network adapter) and do not provide security fixes for the entire operating system.

C. Application updates: These are for third-party software (e.g., a web browser or office suite) and do not patch the underlying operating system itself.

D. Firmware updates: These apply to the low-level software embedded in hardware (e.g., BIOS/UEFI) and are separate from the main operating system's security and feature updates.

1. Official Vendor Documentation (Microsoft): Microsoft Support, "Windows Update: FAQ." This document explicitly states, "Windows Update is a Microsoft service that provides updates for Windows operating systems... These updates often include feature enhancements and security updates to help protect your PC from viruses and other malware." (support.microsoft.com, "Windows Update: FAQ," Section: "What is Windows Update?")

2. Official Vendor Documentation (Cisco): Cisco Networking Academy, "CyberOps Associate v1.0," Module 13: Endpoint Security. Section 13.1.2.3, "Patch Management," discusses the necessity of keeping operating systems and applications patched to protect against exploits. It identifies OS-native services like Windows Update as the mechanism for this process.

3. University Courseware: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) OpenCourseWare, "6.033 Computer System Engineering," Spring 2018. Lecture 21, "Security II," discusses system security principles, where timely patching of vulnerabilities through automated OS update services is presented as a fundamental defense mechanism against exploits. (ocw.mit.edu, Course 6.033, S2018, Lecture 21 Notes, Section on "Defenses").
