What does Unauthenticated mode mean?

In a security context, "unauthenticated mode" refers to a state where a user or computer has not yet successfully proven its identity to the system. Because the entity is unknown, it is inherently considered a potential security risk. However, the system may still grant it limited access, for example, to an authentication portal or basic network services, to allow the authentication process to occur. This state balances the need for security with the functional requirement of allowing users to log in.

B. Trusting based on IP address and username is a form of authentication, not a description of being unauthenticated.

C. This is too specific. Unauthenticated mode is a general state, not tied exclusively to a failure to verify against Active Directory (AD).

D. Trusting based on passwords and usernames is the definition of authentication, which is the opposite of being unauthenticated.

The guide discusses how the system handles traffic from users that are "not yet identified (unauthenticated users)," implying they are treated as unknown and therefore a potential risk until authenticated.
