What is a database management system (DBMS)?

A Database Management System (DBMS) is a software system that enables users to define, create, maintain, and control access to the database. It acts as an intermediary layer between the users/applications and the physical database stored on disk. The DBMS manages all interactions, including data retrieval, updates, security enforcement, concurrency control, and recovery, providing a structured and efficient way to handle data.

B. Data analysis is a task performed using data from the database; the DBMS facilitates this but is not solely an analysis system.

C. Database backups are a critical function managed by the DBMS, but this is only one of its many responsibilities.

D. The DBMS is software that runs on hardware; it does not manage the physical hardware components, which is the role of the operating system.
