What is the function of the Generator in a text generation system?

In a text generation system, particularly one employing a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architecture, the Generator's function is to synthesize a final, human-like text response. It takes the user's original query and combines it with the relevant information that has been previously retrieved and ranked by other components of the system. The Generator, typically a large language model (LLM), uses this combined context to produce a coherent, accurate, and contextually appropriate answer, effectively transforming structured retrieved data into a natural language format.

A. This describes the function of a query parser or an information retrieval component, which processes the initial user input, not the final text generation.

B. This is the primary function of a Ranker or Retriever component, which evaluates and orders retrieved documents based on relevance before they are sent to the Generator.

D. This describes a caching or logging mechanism, which is an auxiliary function for performance optimization or auditing, not the core task of text synthesis.

1. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Documentation: The OCI Generative AI service documentation describes the Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pattern. It explains that after the retrieval step, "The user prompt and the retrieved text are then passed to the LLM to generate a response." In this context, the LLM serves as the Generator.

2. Peer-Reviewed Academic Publication: The foundational paper on RAG explicitly defines the role of the generator. The model consists of a retriever and a generator. The retriever finds relevant documents, which are "then used as context by the generator... to produce the output."
