Which of the following is an essential skill for a threat hunter?

Threat hunting is a proactive and iterative process of searching for cyber threats that have evaded existing security defenses. This process is fundamentally hypothesis-driven. The hypotheses about potential compromises are primarily derived from threat intelligence, which provides critical information about adversary tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs), indicators of compromise (IOCs), and the overall threat landscape. Therefore, the ability to consume, analyze, and apply threat intelligence is an essential and foundational skill for a threat hunter to effectively identify hidden malicious activity.

A. Proficiency in a programming language: While highly beneficial for automation and tool development, it is not an essential prerequisite. Many hunting activities are performed using existing platforms like SIEMs with their own query languages.

B. Proficiency in graphic design: This skill is unrelated to the core analytical, investigative, and technical responsibilities of a threat hunter.

C. Proficiency in database management: While hunters must be proficient at querying data, full database management (administration, schema design) is a separate discipline and not an essential skill for the hunter role.

In Chapter 5, "Threat Hunting," the section "The Threat Hunting Process" explicitly states, "Threat hunting is a proactive approach to finding threats in your network. It uses a hypothesis that is based on threat intelligence..." This establishes the direct and essential link between threat intelligence and the core hunting function.
