What is an intelligent robot?

An intelligent robot is formally defined as a mechanical device that incorporates Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to interact with its environment in a flexible and adaptive manner. Unlike traditional industrial robots that strictly follow pre-programmed, deterministic sequences of movements, intelligent robots utilize AI methodologies—such as machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing—to sense their surroundings, make autonomous decisions, and adapt their actions to dynamic conditions. The APMG AIF curriculum explicitly differentiates between basic automation and intelligent robotics by the presence of these AI-driven cognitive capabilities, avoiding science-fiction concepts like consciousness or strict human mimicry, which are not required for a robot to be classified as intelligent.

A. A robot that has consciousness: Consciousness implies self-awareness and subjective experience, which current AI and robots do not possess; this is a philosophical concept, not a technical definition.

B. A robot that acts like a human: Robots can be intelligent without acting human (e.g., autonomous drones or robotic vacuum cleaners); human mimicry defines androids, not intelligent robots generally.

D. A robot that takes the place of a human: While some robots replace human labor, many intelligent robots augment human capabilities or perform tasks humans cannot, making this definition too narrow.
