The United States National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Special Publication (SP) 800-145, titled "The NIST Definition of Cloud Computing," is the foundational document that defines cloud computing. It is widely accepted globally by government and industry. The publication outlines the five essential characteristics (e.g., on-demand self-service, resource pooling), three service models (SaaS, PaaS, IaaS), and four deployment models (private, public, community, hybrid) that constitute a cloud computing environment.

A. SP 800-153: This publication provides "Guidelines for Securing Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs)," which is unrelated to cloud computing definitions.

C. SP 800-53: This document, "Security and Privacy Controls for Information Systems and Organizations," is a catalog of controls, not a definitional text for cloud computing.

D. SP 800-40: This is the "Guide to Enterprise Patch Management Technologies" and does not pertain to defining core cloud concepts.
