What does the Bonjour zero-configuration networking architecture support?

Bonjour is Apple's implementation of zero-configuration networking (Zeroconf), a suite of protocols built on the IETF standards for multicast DNS (mDNS) and DNS-Based Service Discovery (DNS-SD). Its fundamental purpose is to allow devices on a local area network to automatically discover each other and the services they offer (e.g., printers, file shares, media streaming) without requiring manual configuration of IP addresses, DNS servers, or directory services. It operates on the local link, enabling seamless peer-to-peer discovery and connection between applications and devices.

A. Opportunistic Wireless Encryption (OWE) is a Wi-Fi security standard for encrypting traffic on open networks; it is not related to service discovery.

B. MAC address randomization is a privacy feature used by client devices when connecting to Wi-Fi networks, unrelated to how services are advertised or discovered.

D. RADIUS is a centralized client-server protocol for network authentication, authorization, and accounting (AAA), which is functionally distinct from Bonjour's decentralized service discovery.

Bonjour Overview: "Bonjour

also known as zero-configuration networking

enables automatic discovery of devices and services on a local network using industry standard IP protocols. Bonjour makes it easy to discover

publish

and resolve network services with a sophisticated

easy-to-use programming interface that is accessible from Cocoa

Ruby

Python

and other languages." (Source: Apple

2. IETF RFC 6763

DNS-Based Service Discovery

Section 1 (Introduction): "This document specifies how to use the Domain Name System (DNS) to discover network services

a task often referred to as 'service discovery'. Given a type of service that a client is looking for

and a domain in which the client is looking for that service

this mechanism allows the client to discover a list of named instances of that desired service

using standard DNS queries." (This is the standard Bonjour implements for service discovery).

3. IETF RFC 6762

Multicast DNS

Section 1 (Introduction): "Multicast DNS (mDNS) provides the ability to perform DNS-like operations on the local link in the absence of any conventional Unicast DNS server. [...] mDNS is a component of Zeroconf." (This is the core protocol Bonjour uses for name resolution on the local network).
