The customer's need to manage a dataset that "exceeds the capacity of typical database software tools" is the defining characteristic of a Big Data problem. Big Data refers to the technologies and strategies used to handle massive datasets characterized by high volume, velocity, and variety. This technology stack is specifically designed to capture, store, manage, and perform complex analysis on data that is too large or complex for traditional relational database management systems (RDBMS).

A. Block Storage: This is a low-level data storage mechanism (e.g., SAN) that provides raw volumes of storage; it does not inherently include the software tools required for large-scale data management and analysis.

B. Containers: This is an application virtualization and deployment technology used to package software. It is not a data storage or analytics paradigm itself, although Big Data applications can run within containers.

D. File Storage: This is a general-purpose storage architecture (e.g., NAS). While Big Data platforms use file systems (like HDFS), the term "File Storage" alone does not encompass the specialized distributed processing frameworks required.

1. HPE Official Documentation: In the HPE Reference Architecture for Big Data and Analytics

the introductory section defines Big Data as the challenge of processing data sets so large or complex that traditional data-processing application software is inadequate. The document emphasizes that Big Data solutions are architected to handle the "3Vs" (Volume

Velocity

Variety) which overwhelm conventional databases. (Reference: HPE Reference Architecture for Big Data and Analytics

2. University Courseware: The University of California

Berkeley's "Foundations of Data Science" course defines Big Data as a field dedicated to analyzing and extracting information from data sets that are too large for traditional systems. The course materials explain that specialized distributed systems are required for storage (e.g.

HDFS) and processing (e.g.

MapReduce

Spark)

which are core components of Big Data technology. (Reference: UC Berkeley
