During which phase is it BEST to consider integrating a security system in a project?

The schematic design phase is the most effective and cost-efficient time to consider integrating a security system. During this early phase, the project's fundamental concepts, spatial layouts, and relationships between components are established. Introducing the security system requirements at this stage allows the design team to holistically coordinate its components—such as camera placement, access control points, conduit runs, and security control room locations—with the architectural, electrical, and IT systems. This early integration prevents costly rework, avoids spatial conflicts, and ensures the security system is a seamless and integral part of the overall building design rather than an afterthought.

A. permit review: This phase is for obtaining regulatory approval of already completed construction documents. Introducing a new system at this point would require a major redesign and resubmission, causing significant delays.

B. post-occupancy: This occurs after the project is built and occupied. Adding a security system at this stage would be a costly and disruptive retrofit, not an integrated design solution.

D. construction documents: While the security system is detailed in this phase, the initial planning and integration should have already happened. Waiting until this stage to consider it can lead to major coordination problems and expensive revisions.

" it is stated that during the schematic design phase

"the design team also begins to coordinate the work of the consultants

" the Schematic Design Phase (Section 3.2) is defined as the stage for preparing "diagrams and other graphic and written materials to illustrate the scale and relationship of the Project components." This is the appropriate time to incorporate the requirements of major building systems

including security

to ensure they are properly related to all other components.
