A customer needs to add an EF280 with FC into its existing Brocade fabric but the FC ports in the SANtricity System Manager are showing the FC ports…

The symptoms described—Fibre Channel (FC) ports showing as "down" in SANtricity and an amber HIC LED—indicate a problem at the physical or link layer of the SAN fabric. To resolve this and successfully integrate the EF280 array, the installer must address three key areas:

1. Physical Connectivity: The most fundamental step is to ensure the physical path is complete and correct. This involves verifying that the FC cables are securely plugged into both the EF280 HIC and the Brocade switch ports (B).

2. Link Enablement: Switch ports are often disabled by default for security. The installer must verify the specific ports on the Brocade switch are administratively enabled to allow a link to be established (A).

3. Fabric Access Control: For the server and storage to communicate, the fabric must be configured to permit it. This is achieved through zoning, which requires creating a zone containing the World Wide Port Names (WWPNs) of the EF280 ports and the server's HBA ports (E).

These three tasks cover the physical, link, and fabric service layers required for successful integration.

C. Verify that the server HBA has the boot BIOS enabled

This setting is only for booting an operating system from the SAN and does not affect the physical link status between the storage array and the switch.

D. Verify that the EF280s management port is up

The management port is used for out-of-band administration via SANtricity and is on a separate network from the FC data path; its status is irrelevant to FC connectivity.
