Which events will be returned by the following search string? host=www3 status=503

In Splunk's Search Processing Language (SPL), terms separated by a space imply a boolean AND operator. The search string host=www3 status=503 is interpreted by Splunk as host=www3 AND status=503. This means the search engine will retrieve only those events that satisfy both conditions simultaneously. An event must contain a field named host with the value www3 and also contain a field named status with the value 503 to be included in the results.

A. This describes an OR condition. The search uses an implicit AND, not OR. To get these results, the search would need to be host=www3 OR status=503.

C. The time range is a required component for running a search, but it does not alter the filtering logic of the search string itself. The logic remains an AND condition regardless of the time selected.

D. A search can be run without explicitly specifying an index. In such cases, Splunk will search the default index or indexes configured for the user's role.

"About search language syntax": This document states

"The AND operator is implied between search terms. For example

web error is the same as web AND error." This confirms the default behavior for the provided search string.

"Use boolean and comparison operators": This section details the use of boolean operators

clarifying that to achieve the outcome described in option A

the OR operator must be explicitly used.

Module 3: "Basic Searching": This official courseware

which prepares candidates for the SPLK-1001 exam

teaches that a space between two search terms acts as an implicit AND

meaning results must match all specified criteria.

"Specify time ranges in your search": This section explains that the time range is a separate parameter from the search string that defines the window of time to search

but it does not change the boolean logic of the search terms.
