What value does the Terraform Cloud private registry provide over the public Terraform Module Registry?

The primary value of the Terraform Cloud private registry is its access control mechanism. It allows organizations to host and share modules internally, making them available exclusively to members of that specific Terraform Cloud or Enterprise organization. This ensures that proprietary code, company-specific configurations, or modules under development are not exposed publicly. The private registry acts as a secure, versioned, and centralized repository for an organization's internal infrastructure-as-code assets, facilitating collaboration and standardization within a controlled environment.

A. This describes the function of the public Terraform Module Registry, which is designed for sharing modules with the entire Terraform community, not a private one.

C. Both the public and private registries support module versioning using tags. This is a standard feature for module management, not a unique value of the private registry.

D. The private registry's core purpose is to restrict access to organization members, contrasting with the public registry's open access. It does not combine public and private sharing.

1. HashiCorp Terraform Documentation, "Private Registry": In the "About the Private Registry" section, it states, "The private module registry is a feature of Terraform Cloud and Terraform Enterprise that allows you to share Terraform modules within your organization... Private modules are only available to members of the organizations they are published to." This directly supports the correct answer (B).

2. HashiCorp Terraform Documentation, "The Terraform Registry": This page describes the public registry, stating, "The Terraform Registry is the main public registry of Terraform modules, available at registry.terraform.io." This confirms that sharing modules publicly (A and D) is the function of the public, not private, registry.

3. HashiCorp Terraform Documentation, "Publishing Modules to the Private Registry": Under the "Module Requirements" section, it details the versioning requirements, such as using Git tags that are valid semantic versions (e.g., 1.0.0). This shows that versioning (C) is a fundamental feature and not unique to the private registry.
