What is the 1956 Dartmouth summer research project on Al best known as?

The 1956 Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence is universally recognized as the seminal event that established AI as a formal academic discipline. Organized by John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and Claude Shannon, the workshop brought together the founding figures of the field. It was during the proposal for this event that McCarthy coined the term "artificial intelligence." The workshop's primary purpose and its most significant legacy was to define the scope, vision, and core problems of this new field of research, effectively marking its official birth.

A. The workshop's focus was on the theoretical possibility of creating intelligent machines, not the impact of existing computers.

B. This is too broad; the project had a specific goal of simulating intelligence, not studying the general societal impact of technology.

C. The concept of a test for machine intelligence (the "Turing Test") was proposed by Alan Turing in 1950, predating this project.

August 31). A Proposal for the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence. This primary source document laid out the foundational conjecture for the field: "that every aspect of learning or any other feature of intelligence can in principle be so precisely described that a machine can be made to simulate it." This proposal effectively served as the founding charter for the field of AI.
