What are the five key features of 5G Core?

The 5G Core (5GC) architecture is built on five fundamental principles that enable its flexibility, scalability, and support for diverse services. These are:

1. Control and User Planes Separation (CUPS): Decouples the control plane (signaling) from the user plane (data traffic), allowing them to be scaled, located, and managed independently.

2. Service Based Architecture (SBA): Redesigns the control plane as a set of modular Network Functions (NFs) that expose their functionalities and consume services from other NFs via well-defined APIs, promoting agility and reusability.

3. Multi-Access-Network: Provides a unified core that supports both 3GPP access (e.g., 5G New Radio) and non-3GPP access (e.g., Wi-Fi, fixed-line) technologies seamlessly.

4. State-efficiency: NFs are designed to be stateless, meaning they separate processing logic from user session data (state), which is stored in a centralized data repository. This enhances resilience, scalability, and simplifies cloud-native deployments.

5. Network Slicing: Allows for the creation of multiple, isolated, end-to-end virtual networks on a common physical infrastructure, each tailored to specific service requirements (e.g., latency, bandwidth).

A. "Adaptive Architecture" and "Dynamic Control plane" are generic terms, not specific 5GC architectural principles. "Network Self-healing" is an operational capability enabled by the architecture, not a foundational feature itself.

B. "Dynamic Control plane" is a vague description. The correct, specific principle is the separation of control and user planes (CUPS), which is a more fundamental concept than just being 'dynamic'.

C. "Adaptive Architecture" and "Dynamic Control plane" are not standard terms for the core 5GC principles. While related, they lack the specificity of CUPS and SBA.

1. 3GPP TS 23.501 V16.7.0 (2020-12), "System architecture for the 5G System (5GS); Stage 2": This is the primary specification defining the 5G architecture.

Section 4.2.2, "Architectural Principles": Explicitly lists Service-Based Architecture.

Section 4.2.6, "Support of Non-3GPP Access": Details the Multi-Access-Network capability.

Section 4.2.7, "Control and User Plane Separation": Defines the CUPS principle.

Section 4.2.8, "Stateless NFs and separated data storage": Explains the principle of state-efficiency.

Section 4.2.9, "Network Slicing": Describes the support for network slicing.

2. Nokia, "5G Core White Paper": Official vendor documentation often outlines these key architectural pillars. For example, Nokia's materials on their cloud-native 5G Core consistently highlight SBA, CUPS, stateless design, and network slicing as foundational elements. (Note: Specific document IDs change, but the content is consistent across Nokia's 5G Core portfolio descriptions).
