What is the Unstructured Data Storage Function (UDSF)?

The Unstructured Data Storage Function (UDSF) is a network function within the 5G Core's Common Data Layer. Its specific purpose is to store and retrieve unstructured data, which is data that does not conform to the standardized, structured data models defined by 3GPP. This function is optional and complements the Unified Data Repository (UDR), which is responsible for storing standardized data such as user subscription profiles and policy information. The UDSF provides a flexible storage solution for any Network Function (NF) that needs to persist non-standardized data, such as vendor-specific or application-specific information.

A. This describes the Network Exposure Function (NEF), which securely exposes network capabilities and events to authorized third-party applications.

B. This describes the Unified Data Repository (UDR), which is also in the Common Data Layer but specifically stores 3GPP standardized, structured data.

D. This describes the Unified Data Management (UDM) function, which is a control plane function that manages and provides access to subscription data stored in the UDR.

1. 3GPP TS 23.501, "System architecture for the 5G System (5GS); Stage 2" (V17.7.0, Release 17).

Section 5.2.1.3, "Data Storage network functions": This section explicitly defines the UDSF: "The Unstructured Data Storage Function (UDSF) is an optional function that can be used to store and retrieve unstructured data by any NF." This directly supports the correct answer by defining its role for unstructured data.

2. Nokia, "Shared Data Layer" Product Datasheet.

Product Overview Section: Nokia's documentation for its Shared Data Layer (SDL) product, which implements the 3GPP Common Data Layer, states that the SDL incorporates both the UDR and UDSF. It clarifies that the "UDR stores and provides structured data... while the UDSF is designed for unstructured data," reinforcing the distinction made in the correct answer.

3. Aalto University, Course ELEC-E7320 - "Mobile Communication Systems" Lecture Notes.

Lecture on "5G System Architecture": Course materials typically define the core network functions. In the section covering the 5G Service-Based Architecture, the UDSF is defined as a stateful message store for unstructured data, contrasting it with the UDR, which handles structured subscription and policy data. This aligns with the explanation provided.
