What organization maintains and publishes the 802.15.4 Standard?

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the professional organization that develops, maintains, and publishes the 802 family of networking standards. The IEEE 802.15 Working Group is responsible for Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) standards. Specifically, Task Group 4 (TG4) created the 802.15.4 standard, which specifies the physical layer (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) for low-rate wireless personal area networks (LR-WPANs). This standard is the foundation upon which protocols like Zigbee, Thread, and WirelessHART are built.

A. Bluetooth SIG: This organization develops and maintains the Bluetooth standards, which are distinct from IEEE 802.15.4, although both concern WPANs.

C. IETF: The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) focuses on higher-level Internet protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, HTTP), published as RFCs, not physical/MAC layer standards.

D. Zigbee Alliance: Now part of the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), this group defines the Zigbee protocol stack, which uses the IEEE 802.15.4 standard but does not create or maintain it.
