ONU support ONU plug and play, power on and go.

Modern Optical Network Units (ONUs) are designed for Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP), which is functionally equivalent to "plug and play." When an ONU is connected to the fiber network and powered on, it automatically initiates a discovery process with the Optical Line Terminal (OLT). The OLT can then identify the ONU (typically by its serial number), authenticate it, and automatically apply a pre-configured service profile without manual intervention from a technician on-site. This "power on and go" capability drastically simplifies deployment and reduces operational costs.

The statement "False" is incorrect because it contradicts the fundamental design principles of modern, large-scale PON deployments. Requiring manual, on-site configuration for every ONU would be operationally inefficient and economically unfeasible for service providers deploying fiber to thousands or millions of homes and businesses. The entire management protocol, ITU-T G.988 (OMCI), is built to enable remote, automated management and provisioning from the OLT.

1. Huawei. (2023). iMaster NCE-FAN Product Documentation - Feature Guide. Section on "ONU Zero Touch Provisioning." This documentation details the automated process: "After an ONU is powered on and connected to an OLT, the OLT automatically discovers and adds the ONU... iMaster NCE-FAN automatically configures the ONU based on the pre-configured ZTP policy."

2. ITU-T Recommendation G.988. (2020). ONU management and control interface (OMCI) specification. Section 7 "Protocol baseline." The standard defines the mechanisms that allow an OLT to manage and configure a connected ONU, forming the basis for automated plug-and-play functionality.
