What is a characteristic employed by transactional leaders?

Transactional leadership is a style focused on supervision, organization, and performance. It relies on a system of rewards and punishments. The core of this approach is the exchange between the leader and the follower, where the leader clarifies roles and task requirements and provides rewards (e.g., bonuses, recognition) contingent upon the follower meeting performance expectations. This "contingent reward" is a defining characteristic of the transactional style, as it directly links performance to promised outcomes.

A. Provides vision and sense of mission: This is a key characteristic of transformational leadership, which focuses on inspiring followers to transcend their own self-interests for the good of the organization.

B. Promotes intelligence and rationality: This, known as intellectual stimulation, is a component of transformational leadership, where leaders encourage creativity and problem-solving.

C. Instills pride and gains trust: This describes idealized influence (charisma), a fundamental aspect of transformational leadership where leaders act as role models.

In Chapter 12, "Leadership," the text explicitly defines transactional leaders as those who "guide their followers toward established goals by clarifying role and task requirements." It lists "Contingent Reward" as the first characteristic, described as contracting exchange of rewards for effort and promising rewards for good performance (pp. 416-417).

This foundational article contrasts transactional leadership (contingent reward, management-by-exception) with transformational leadership (charisma, inspiration, etc.).
