Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design is a set of management tools targeting:

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is a strategic framework that focuses on how the design, layout, and management of physical environments can influence human behavior to prevent crime. The core principle is that opportunities for crime can be reduced by creating spaces that discourage offenders and encourage legitimate users. It targets the interplay between places (the environment), the design and use of that space, and the resulting human behavior, rather than focusing solely on specific security hardware.

A. vault, safe, and intrusion testing.

These are specific asset protection measures and validation techniques, not the broad, holistic environmental approach of CPTED.

B. access control. CCTV and burglar and fire alarm systems.

These are technical security systems. While they can be integrated into a CPTED strategy, they are tools, not the fundamental target of the CPTED philosophy.

C. fencing, lighting, bollards, and gates.

These are physical security elements. They are applications or components used to achieve CPTED principles (e.g., territoriality, access control), not the core concept CPTED targets.

M. A. (Eds.). (2018). The Protection of Assets (POA). ASIS International. In the Physical Security volume

CPTED is defined as a discipline that "outlines how the proper design and effective use of the built environment can lead to a reduction in the fear and incidence of crime and an improvement in the quality of life." This directly supports the focus on design

use of space

and behavior.

"CPTED is concerned with the relationship between the physical environment and the users of that environment... It seeks to create the reality (and perception) of risk for potential offenders" (p. 330). This highlights the focus on the relationship between places

design

and behavior.

"The CPTED Concept

" explains that CPTED is about designing and managing the environment to influence behavior and reduce the opportunity for crime

directly aligning with the concepts of places

behavior

and the use of space.
