Which of the following are benefits of life cycle management?

Life cycle management (LCM) is a structured approach to managing a system, product, or application from its conception through its end-of-life. A fundamental benefit of this methodology is the clear identification and definition of all distinct stages (e.g., design, deployment, operations, maintenance, retirement). This clarity provides predictability, enhances control, and allows for better planning, resource allocation, and risk management. By formalizing the stages, organizations can implement standardized procedures and automation, which is crucial for managing complex systems like 5G network functions. This structured view ensures all stakeholders understand the status, requirements, and transitions between phases.

A. The length of a life cycle is a characteristic of the managed entity, not an inherent benefit of the management process itself.

B. Life cycle management is a foundational principle in systems and software engineering that predates and extends beyond cloud-native architectures.

1. European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). (2014). ETSI GS NFV-MAN 001 V1.1.1 - Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV); Management and Orchestration.

Reference: Section 6.2.1, "VNF Lifecycle Management," explicitly defines the distinct stages for Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs), such as instantiation, scaling, and termination. This standardization demonstrates the core benefit of having clearly identified stages.

2. Nokia. (2022). Nokia Cloud Native Core - The foundation for 5G evolution. White Paper.

Reference: This document, in its discussion of Cloud Native Network Functions (CNFs), emphasizes the importance of automated life cycle management. It describes how the operational model relies on well-defined states and processes (e.g., instantiation, healing, upgrading), reinforcing that clearly identified stages are a prerequisite and benefit for efficient operations in a 5G core network.

3. Guttag, J. V. (2013). 6.0001 Introduction to Computer Science and Programming in Python. Fall 2016. Massachusetts Institute of Technology: MIT OpenCourseWare.

Reference: While a general software course, the principles of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) are discussed, which is a form of LCM. The course materials on "Testing, Debugging, Exceptions, and Assertions" implicitly rely on the existence of distinct development, testing, and deployment stages, illustrating that this identification is a core benefit of managing the process.
