What is the maximum distance of an Edge Cloud from end-user?

The Edge Cloud is architecturally defined by its proximity to the end-user, which is essential for delivering ultra-low latency services required by applications like 5G URLLC, AR/VR, and industrial automation. Official Nokia technical documentation and industry standards place the Edge Cloud within a few hundred kilometers of the user. This placement ensures round-trip time (RTT) latency is kept below 10 milliseconds. Distances greater than this, such as 1,000 km, are characteristic of Regional Clouds, which represent a different tier in the distributed cloud hierarchy with higher latency profiles (10-20 ms RTT).

A. 1,000 KM: This distance defines the typical maximum for a Regional Cloud or Regional Data Center, not an Edge Cloud. It corresponds to a higher latency tier (10-20 ms RTT).

B. 5,000 KM: This represents a continental-scale distance, characteristic of a centralized national or multi-national cloud, with latency far too high for edge computing applications.

C. 10,000 KM: This is an intercontinental distance, associated with global centralized clouds, and is fundamentally opposite to the low-latency principle of edge architecture.

Quote: "The edge cloud can be located anywhere from on-premises at an enterprise site to the network edge, which can be a few kilometers to a few hundred kilometers away from the end user/device." This directly supports that the maximum distance is in the hundreds of kilometers, making 300 KM the most plausible maximum among the choices.

Content: The presentation provides a clear architectural distinction based on latency, which is a direct function of distance. It defines the Edge Cloud as providing 20ms RTT. A 300 km distance corresponds to an RTT of approximately 3-5 ms, fitting squarely in the Edge Cloud definition, while a 1,000 km distance corresponds to an RTT of ~10 ms, marking the boundary of a Regional Cloud.

Content: This foundational text notes that the speed of light in fiber optic cable imposes a latency of roughly 5 microseconds (µs) per kilometer. Therefore, a 300 km distance results in a one-way latency of 1.5 ms (3 ms RTT), while a 1,000 km distance results in a one-way latency of 5 ms (10 ms RTT). This physics-based calculation validates the latency tiers defined in Nokia's architecture.
